The yellow lower cowling identified German aircraft flying over the Western Front. The white rudder was often used by the formation leaders from 1943 through to the second half of 1944. The red fuselage band was seen on aircraft of several fighter units during the spring of 1944. Besides JG 1, the same marking could be found on JG 300 aircraft. Heinz B\u00e4r is the eighth ranking fighter ace of the Third Reich, shooting down 221 enemy aircraft. He was awarded the second highest German millitary honor \u2013 the Knight\u2019s Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.
