Alan C. Deere was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He entered the RAF in 1937 and fought against Nazi Germany from the outbreak of the war in France. Deere took significant part in the Battle of Britain and flew Spitfires over occupied Europe. From June 1943, he led Biggin Hill Wing for six months and added four more kills to his eighteen confirmed victories during this period.
